Am I wrong in my thinking? If you really want to help the cause you should buy stuff with bitcoins. That's what they are for. Not investing or making a profit. How do you get bitcoins to buy stuff without mining? I wouldn't really want to buy them from someone else. Wouldn't that be considered investing in the currency if I did that? Its a currency exchange. You're still buying from someone but it's through an exchange.
What I was trying to get at in this thread was if my could do a admirable job starting out at mining bitcoins. The type of "competition" that is created by mining coins was intriguing to me when I was reding about it. I was interested in the hardware aspect of it and not just buying bitcoins from someone else.
This competition is what drives me to do folding home and the arbitrary points in that project which are awarded to you for completeing a work unit. Go ahead and try it and see how it goes. If you're already doing folding home then you're already paying for that electricity.
Switching to bitcoin won't cost you anything. That's not true at all. I have some "super machines" and I also put a high end GPU in my desktop machine. I mine with both. The amount of money you make scales linearly with how many GPUs you have. So actually if you already have a computer sitting around, and just want to put a high-end GPU in it and start mining, the cost is actually lower then building a full scale mining rig, since you don't have the 'extra' costs PSU, Mobo, etc.
People say it's not profitable because they're mining and don't want more miners. Frankly I kinda want that too. They'd rather you'd buy bitcoins I had this in mind when the replies started coming in ; I thought it was very strange everyone was discouraging me to start mining for coins.
I was actually throwing around the idea of buying a 68xx or 69xx GPU to throw in an extra computer laying around to maybe get started mining because I read that the client basically just uses the GPU power, you can get by with a single core Sempron as a cpu, that's unheard of in the folding protein world!
We're not discouraging you, just telling you how it is. Download guiminer and try it if you're that curious. You're going to lose dollars on electricity but gain a bitcoin in about a week and a half. The GPU clients for folding proteins are still mostly experimental.
Nvidia cards are more efficient folding while ATi don't fold as well. A powerful Nvidia card will net you around 18k points per day while a top of the line ATi will get you around 8k-9k per day. If you are in it to get serious points you fold on your CPU, which has to be something like a k if you want BIG points. To put it in perspective the average workunit for a GPU would award you around 1, points and around 3 hrs to finish while a advance workunit on the CPU called bigadv would award you 60k points and take you around 2 days to complete.

Operations on valid input may still result in output strings that are 'dangerous'. Prematurely rejecting commands with control or non-ASCII characters would of course be more reasonable, as there are none of those that we handle anyway. This would solve this problem thoroughly without any potential side-impact on the code.
